Martial Arts Styles Available For Instruction
From top to bottom, standing or on the ground, we teach a variety of martial art styles and self defense techniques for everyone ages 7 and older. We promote discipline as well as having fun while helping us all to become better people.
Karate (空手) is a martial art that developed from a synthesis of indigenous Ryukyuan fighting methods and Chinese kempo. "Karate" originally meant Te, or hand, i.e. Chinese hand, which was later changed to a homonym meaning 'empty hand' in Japanese. It is known primarily as a striking art, featuring punching, kicking, knee/elbow strikes and open handed techniques as well as Kata. The Kata is a series of moves or a pattern that reveals all the elements they have learned in a combined form.
Karate is the foundation of our curriculum that we start the majority of our new students in. This martial art style is easy to learn, helps students quickly understand balance, power, and to stay focused. Several techniques in this style also correlate to other styles they will learn later on.
Jujitsu (柔術), meaning "gentle/yielding/compliant art", is a Japanese martial art whose central ethos is to yield to the force provided by an opponent's attack in order to apply counter techniques from the resultant ensuing situation. This martial art form may use throwing, trapping, locking, holding down, grappling, and other submission techniques.
Generally, students with at least some training in Karate would be able to start learning this art form. Older students; typically twelve and older; will adapt to this art form very quickly. This form is more “partner based” in its nature and combines several different opportunities for both offense and defense.
Judo (柔道, jūdō), meaning "gentle way", is a modern Japanese martial art and combat sport, that originated in Japan in the late nineteenth century. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the object is to either throw one's opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue one's opponent with a grappling maneuver, or force an opponent to submit.
Basically the students learn throwing, sweeping, and takedown techniques that allows them advantage of overcoming an attack before the attack actually happens. By using your opponents movement and force, you quickly apply it back to them reversing the attack.
Generally, students with some Karate and Jujitsu experience will adapt well to this martial art style.
Mixed Weapons
Nunchaku (ヌンチャク, noon-cha-koo), "Paired sections staff”; "Two section staff", also sometimes called "nunchucks", "numchuks", or "chain sticks" in English is a martial arts weapon of the Japanese and consists of two sticks connected at their ends with a short chain or rope. Students can learn various strikes, blocks, and submission techniques using this foam padded weapon.
Bō Staff (棒: ぼう) or kon, is a long staff, usually made of tapered hard wood, for example white oak, bamboo and in some cases for training purposes, rotan. Bō technique includes a wide variety of blocks, strikes, sweeps, and entrapments as well as kata that are performed individually and with partners.
Katana (刀 or かたな, kah-tah-nah) is a type of Japanese sword often referred to as a "samurai sword." We use an imitation sword called a bokken (bo-ken) to practice drawing and cutting techniques. Several kata can be performed using the Katana as well as learning respect and appreciation for this beautiful instrument.
Mixed weapons classes will be taught throughout the Karate class times.
All Practice Weapons are available for purchase at classes.

We promote FUN in everything we do. Student’s will adapt quickly by learning techniques with purpose and not boring routines. Sensei Tom has a way of connecting with all of the students both young and old. Retention of students has never been an issue with our organization. (Ask all of the students still in attendance.)
We also reward students for positive attitude, most improved student, best attendance, and many other criteria. The student comes first before any technique is taught. We have been known to work wonders with students having ADHD, self esteem issues, depression, and overall organizational and discipline problems.
Parents: You will enjoy watching your kids excel in a martial art, seeing them promoted in rank, watching them perform several techniques AND be able to handle themselves in any situation...you may even have fun yourself.
